Sterilization

Your health is our primary concern. You may have noticed that your family dentist and his or her employees have been wearing gloves, masks, or even protective eyewear during your regular dental check-up. By wearing this protective clothing, your dental team is following the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) guidelines for "Universal Precautions" - a system for infectious disease control. They are doing this to protect YOU and themselves from the possible spread of communicable diseases.

While your orthodontic examination and treatment differ from the treatment you receive from your family dentist, your orthodontist also utilizes universal precautions to protect you.

Universal precautions include:
  • Removable appliances; minor expansion appliances: holding arches, and removable braces
  • washing hands before and after each treatment
  • wearing gloves for all patient treatment and changing gloves after each patient
  • wearing masks and protective eyewear during certain types of patient treatment
  • wearing protective clothing if treatment can create the spattering of body fluids
  • sterilizing or disinfecting orthodontic instruments after each use
  • cleaning and disinfecting equipment and surfaces in the treatment room
  • disposing orthodontic wires and other contaminated material
We use a cold sterile and ultrasonic machine to sterilize the equipment and surfaces in order to kill bacteria and viruses. The autoclave heats the equipment above 400 degrees to further insure the destruction of microscopic organisms.

To keep up to date on the advances in orthodontic care, Dr. Iverson continually updates his knowledge in his field. He is committed to staying in the forefront of Orthodontic Science.
